You can sample summer wines in Vail

VAIL - Vail's Sweet Basil Monday holds the third event in its weekly cooking and entertaining series, "Love Our Locals." Called "Summer Sippers," the informal wine tasting gives attendees a chance to sample whites, roses and other wines just in time for the dog days of summer.

"It's a fun way to take advantage of a quieter time of the year to share our experience of what we're truly passionate about." says Matt Morgan, managing partner. "This Monday our sommelier, Wade Vizena, will highlight some fun economical wines to enjoy at home or in a restaurant."

Limiting the wine tasting to only 40 people, Sweet Basil will keep the feel of an intimate educational tasting.

"The Summer Sippers night was perfect for me." says Stacy Reid, an Edwards resident who attended last year's event. "I love wine but am not an expert. Wade took all the pretense and intimidation factor out of a wine tasting and I even found great inexpensive bottles for under $20. I'm excited to see what they have in store this year."

Vizena says he loves introducing people to great fun wines to enjoy. "I call them 'porch pounders,'" he says "You know, wines that are easily accessible and great for warm afternoons by the pool, on the deck grilling or even something to carry in your backpack for a day hike."

There will be approximately 10 to 14 wines to sample at the tasting along with light hors d'ourves to compliment the flavors in the wine. Pouring beside Vizena will be some of Vail's local wine processionals who are on-hand to answer wine questions. Some of the standards will be poured but also look for some obscure wines that will be fun to try.

"Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, anything crisp and un-oaky" Vizena says.

Stacy Romer came to the Summer Sippers last year by herself. "I love wine and just wanted to learn more about it. I went by myself, knew nobody there, but by the time I left I had made at least three new wine friends."
