Pa. man suspected in murder arrested in Colorado

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - A suburban Philadelphia man who police say conspired with a woman to kill her husband has been captured in Colorado.

Twenty-one-year-old Stephen Michael Shappell was arrested Sunday night in Denver. He and 34-year-old Morgan Marie Mengel are charged in the death of his boss and her husband, 33-year-old Kevin Mengel Jr.

Police say Shappell, an employee of Kevin Mengel's Chester County landscaping business, and Morgan Mengel planned the slaying so they could be together.

West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll says Kevin Mengel was apparently bludgeoned to death at his business June 17. His mother reported him missing on Father's Day after receiving suspicious text messages purported to be from him.

Hours after Morgan Mengel's arrest, police unearthed his body with the aid of cadaver dogs.
