EAGLE — The Jammin' into the Bowlmor music series returns to the Back Bowl this Saturday at 8 p.m., with debut appearance of one of Denver's premier jazz and blues bands, Roots & Rhythm. If you like the jazz-club feel of kicking back and watching serious musicians laying down some great rifs, then this is might just be the time to rally.
With one of the hippest jazz and blues scenes between the Mississippi and the west coast, Denver has quietly become a hotbed for talented musicians with a passion for the standards. Having established themselves as a force upon that scene, Roots & Rhythm slides seamlessly between smoky New York City Jazz and soulful Chicago blues with stops in between in St. Louis, Memphis and points beyond, wherever the free flowing bass lines may lead.
Wielding a gritty, club-weary voice that takes on the full force of the music he sings, front man James Speiser's vocals are perfectly complimented by the soulful and sultry notes that emanate from the bell of Patty Melt's saxophone. While Speiser's guitar and Melt's sax are free to roam, the rest of the band — Kevin Smith on drums and Warren Ward holding up the bass line — do the heavy lifting, keeping the backbeat and the rhythm in sync, readily establishing the foundation upon which all is structured.
To see Roots & Rhythm is to step back to a time with America's homegrown form of music when melody — not showmanship — still played a central role in establishing the musical journey and when syncopation rather than volume was the integral part that experience. It is this true-to-form dedication to the music that has landed Roots & rhythm gigs in such musical hotbeds as San Francisco and Austin.
The ‘Jamming into the Bowlmor' music series presents free live music in the Bowlmor Lounge on Saturdays. The Bowlmor Café is also offering a dinner and show special that includes a steak dinner for only $11.95 with a bottle of wine for an additional $9.
