Vail Valley Cares, a local ecumenical Christian help organization, recently announced the remodeling and re-grand opening of the Edwards Thrifty Shop. In celebration, the store will host a week of festivities, including daily discounts, sales and special giveaways running through March 12. Donors and customers can find more information through the Thrifty Shop's Facebook page: “Vail Valley Cares Facebook” under “Vail Valley Cares.”
It has been 17 years since Jerry Millsaps and Benny Clark transferred an office full of items donated by church members to a new “thrift shop” facility in Edwards. Thanks to a grant from the Vail Valley Rotary Club the new Edwards Thrifty Shoppe — as it was called then — was born.
The Thrifty Shoppe provided a place where people could purchase needed clothing and household items at fantastic discounts. The funds generated would soon be used to help the community in yet another way: grants. The Thrifty Shops in the Eagle River Valley (Edwards and Eagle) have provided nearly $1.7 million in grants to local charitable organizations since 2000. Vail Valley Cares and the Thrifty Shops also provide household items and clothing to other non-profit organizations for their constituents.
The Edwards store has grown over the years, and now occupies the entire bottom floor of the building.
“The Edwards store remodel will allow us to better serve our donors and our customers,” said Vail Valley Cares Director Greg Osteen. “The new layout and better design will make us more efficient. What we save in efficiency we can add to our grants, which means local charities receive more funding. It's a win for everyone.”
The improved Edwards Thrifty Shop also features twice as many dressing rooms and restrooms, as well as an disabled-accessible dressing room and bathroom. Improved lighting and a new donor drop-off and sorting area create a nicer experience for everyone.
“After 17 years of steady growth it was time to reorganize a bit,” Osteen said. “We've been looking forward to the unveiling for quite some time. We hope the positive changes inside translate to increased donations, more purchases and, ultimately, more funding for local charities. Our goal remains to help the people in this community.”
