In the film “Inner Room,” a couple visits a secluded cabin following a tragedy. Instead of finding reprieve, Julianne (Jessica Duffy) starts having horrific visions. The film, directed and produced by Colorado filmmakers, is one of handful of Colorado-born-and-bred movies showing at the Vail Film Festival. The film's director, Jack Gastelbondo took the time to answer a few questions for the Vail Daily.
Vail Daily: You filmed much of this movie in Fairplay. Tell us why you chose to film in Colorado?
Jack Gastelbondo: We wanted to make a movie using beautiful Colorado. We live here and so that was also a practical choice, of course. We went with Fairplay since that's where we found the cabin that suited the story best.
VD: Will you be attending the festival?
JG: Both Mark Diestler (producer) and I will be attending the festival along with a number of cast and crew members. We look forward to seeing the film before an audience.
VD: How long did it take you to write the script?
JG: The story was written quickly. At the time, we were working on a different script and realized that we needed to work on something with fewer locations and a smaller cast in order to make our first feature. The protagonist is based loosely on someone I know. But, the events of the story are fictional. I wanted to write a story about a character who couldn't let go of her past and was constantly looking for answers regarding her life. Also, it was important to make this story work with only a few key characters that could develop the premise gradually.
VD: Tell us about the making of this film? Any interesting stories?
JG: We shot the whole film in about 20 days. All but one day was shot in a Fairplay cabin and the forest surrounding it. The cabin was powered by a generator and this definitely made us more aware of how we couldn't have the lights on all the time. We ran into a couple of obstacles here and there but in the end, things worked out. Oh, and there was a half bottle of missing Tequila incident but my lawyers have advised me not to talk about it.
VD: This is the world premiere of your film. Any plans to show it at other festivals yet? And if so, where?
JG: We would love to show our film in other festivals. We are currently seeking distribution for the film.
VD: Are you based in Colorado? Was it important to you to premiere the film in Colorado?
JG: We are based out of Denver. All of the cast and crew has ties to Colorado. Having the premiere in Colorado is key to us. We love it here and would like to make more films in state.
VD: What else should Vail Film Festival attendees know?
JG: Jessica Duffy has the sexiest feet in the world!
