EDWARDS, Colorado - Colleagues remember former 15-year Colorado Mountain College employee Mike Doyle, who died in an auto accident in November, as a caring team player with a positive attitude who was passionate about helping students.
In his memory, friends at the college have created a chance for teams to come together to raise funds to help the students Doyle cared about.
The first Michael Doyle Memorial Scholarship Tournament is scheduled for Friday at the Gypsum Creek Golf Club. Funds raised will support college scholarships for students in financial need. Sponsors plan to make the golf tournament an annual event to honor Doyle's legacy of encouraging students to strive to improve academically.
Starting this summer, Doyle also will be honored as part of the Upward Bound Summer Academy, the four-week program at the college's campus in Leadville. Upward Bound Director Debi Martinez-Brun said the "Mike Doyle Recognition" will be given to an academy student who goes above and beyond and demonstrates the qualities Doyle embodied, such as a willingness to help others and a genuine acceptance and respect for others.
"Mike was our administrative assistant who valued the students' capabilities, a genuine team player who did more than expected and accepted students as they are," Martinez-Brun said.
Doyle's official role at the college was as an administrative assistant to the federally funded TRIO programs. Those programs include Upward Bound, which is a pre-collegiate program that, through CMC, supports students in Eagle and Leadville high schools, and Student Support Services, serving the college's residential sites in Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, Leadville and Steamboat Springs, as well as the campuses in Rifle and Edwards. Through the years, Doyle worked at CMC in Rifle, Spring Valley and Eagle.
The $75 individual fee for the four-person scramble tournament includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, contest awards and chances at prizes. Individuals who wish to register or sponsor a hole can contact Michael Trujillo at firstname.lastname@example.org or 970-569-2922.
