BEAVER CREEK, Colorado — Tonight, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, led by music director Michael Butterman, will bring a French-American program to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. The first half of the program is French, the second American, with pieces that were inspired by an American's take on Paris and a Frenchman's take on America.
It's an evening of music infused with the spirit of France, including works by Satie, Ravel, Gershwin and Hanson. The evening will open with Satie's familiar “Gymnopedies” and the colorful and cinematic “Romantic Symphony,” by Howard Hanson. The spirit of American jazz animates Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, featuring pianist Benjamin Hochman, 2011 recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, awarded to young artists on the cusp of brilliant solo careers. Gershwin's ever-popular “An American in Paris” will close the evening program.
Under the vision and leadership of Butterman, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating its 54th year of providing orchestral music for the people of Colorado. The Boulder Philharmonic is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra, presenting performances nine months out of the year and employing a core of 72 highly trained musicians.
The Vilar Center introduces “pay what you will” ticket pricing for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra performance today. The special pricing will also be available at three additional performances in the Vilar's 2011-12 winter season: “Great Moments of Opera,” presented by Teatro Lirico D'Europa (Feb. 10); “Doubt: A Parable,” presented by Montana Repertory Theatre (Feb. 13); and Moscow Festival Ballet (Feb. 22).
Full-price tickets for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra are $65 for advanced seating, or interested parties can purchase “pay what you will” tickets in person at the box office in Beaver Creek starting at 4 p.m. today. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, until sold out.
