Virginia R. “Davey” Burnett , of Minturn, age 88, passed away peacefully at Vail Valley Medical Center on January 11, 2012 surrounded by family.
She was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Aspen. Davey attended elementary and middle school in Eagle County and graduated from Minturn High School in 1941.
She was married to her high school sweetheart, William W. “Bill” Burnett on Aug. 9, 1941, in Salida.
Davey and Bill's “honeymoon suite” can still be found on Pine Street in Minturn, just blocks away from the house they would call home for more than 70 years.
It's the house they raised their daughters Billie Jean and Terry in, and it's where they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on Aug. 9, 2007.
After marriage, Davey found herself a mother and military wife, while Bill served in World War II. She worked as a postal clerk and in the local grocery store known as the Minturn Mercantile, where the Minturn Country Club now stands, and later as a nurses aide in the Gilman Hospital.
Davey and her cousin Rixie Flewelling, owned and operated a craft shop called “Cuz,”
located where the Meadow Mountain Business Center is today. She was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, active in Canasta Club, bowling leagues, snowmobile clubs and the Neighbors of Wood Craft Lodge.
Davey will be remembered for her open heart, quick wit, laughter and big smile.
She loved a good joke.
Davey spent her time listening to the Minturn Town Council, Battle Mountain High School and Vail Christian School football. She enjoyed many stories on audio, and working crossword puzzles. She loved hearing about the family, and what was happening in their lives.
Since Davey lost her eyesight to Macular Degeneration, she always looked forward to her son-in-law, Jim Lovato, reading her the newspaper. At home Davey always had cookies and a pot of coffee to offer her visitors, and at the hospital she had always offered chocolates.
