Podie Dixon, died peacefully at the age of 70 as the sun was rising at her Edwards home on Sunday, Jan. 29, with family members at her side. She had been recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
Born June 18, 1941, in Baltimore, to Grace Loretta Pierce and Winston Churchill Bedell, Podie attended Dundalk High School and graduated from the University of Maryland. The “Duchess of Dundalk” started her working career as a teacher, and her entrepreneurial spirit quickly shown through leading her to own a wide variety of businesses including caterer, a sewing shop, wedding coordinator and property manager.
Podie danced through life, from her tryout with the Rockettes as a teenager to her tap classes at the age of 70. She lived big, bold and free, creating laughter and fun wherever she was. Podie had a wicked sense of humor and loved good friends, good wine and good food.
An avid reader and great conversationalist, she was well versed on many subjects including art, travel, theater, politics, world news, and history. Podie enjoyed any live music, dance or theater performance, buying season tickets so she wouldn't miss an event.
Adventurous travel enriched Podie's life, and her home décor reflected eclectic treasures from African safaris, trips to Asia and Europe as well as tours throughout America. A talented seamstress, Podie was a lifelong member of the “Stitch n' Bitch” group from Parker. Active throughout her life, she enjoyed skiing and hiking, and more recently Pilates and water aerobics.
Podie was passionate about helping people and could always be found volunteering for innumerable causes around the valley. If there was a fundraiser for someone in need, Podie would be there, helping the cause both financially and with her time. She was also an active member of her church Unity of the Mountains.
Podie is survived by her daughter Heather Dixon of Denver, son Ross Dixon (Patti Plagens) of Edwards; sisters Sharon Abbots of St. Petersburg, Florida and Denise Dodson of Foresthill, Maryland; nieces Laura Bates and Kelly Brotchi both of St. Petersburg, Florida. She was predeceased by her parents.
A memorial service is set for 6 p.m. Friday, February 10 at Donovan Pavilion, 1600 S. Frontage Rd. in Vail.
As Podie had so many causes, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to a local charity of your choice.
