EDWARDS — Uma Fitness in Edwards is offering yoga classes for children ages 4 to 9, starting Feb. 13.
The classes will be taught by Amy Archer, longtime resident, mom, and certified kids' yoga instructor. Archer was certified by Haris Lender, founder of Kidding Around Yoga in St. Petersburg, Fla.
“We are excited to be able to offer yoga to children,” Archer said. “Introducing your kids to the world of yoga may be one of the greatest gifts you will ever give them.”
During each class, children will play games, act out stories, stretch, dance and move their bodies into different yoga poses. They will also lay still, relax and breathe. “Kids' yoga classes are designed to help teach children compassion and mindfulness while learning many of the traditional hatha yoga poses,” Archer said.
This four-week series will include:
• Proper breathing as a way to energize, learn concentration and reduce stress.
• Standing poses for posture and strength.
• Balancing poses. The brain works along with the body's inner core, developing focus, strength, balance and poise.
• Backbends, which open and strengthen the heart and chest.
• Forward bends, which help the digestive system.
• Inversions and difficult poses that build self-esteem by teaching children that they can achieve what they set out to do all on their own.
• Relaxation poses. Reducing stress and learning to calm yourself helps children learn to focus.
Archer said her goal is to create a safe, fun-filled and loving environment for all kids.
The series of classes will begin Feb. 13, from 4 to 5 p.m. Cost is $40 for the four weeks, and $30 for each additional sibling. Deadline for registration is Friday, and the class size will be limited to 10. Call or email Archer at 970-331-4289 or aimarcher@hotmail.com.
