What goods or services do you provide? We are an independent, SEC-registered investment advisory firm with offices in Colorado and South Carolina. We specialize in constructing and managing “dividend growth” investment portfolios for individual investors and their families.
All of our client portfolios own only dividend-paying stocks and every stock is expected to grow its dividend annually. Our objective is to enable our clients to build a growing dividend income stream that they either spend or reinvest, while preserving and growing their principal.
What is new or exciting at your place? We are very excited to be opening our Colorado office in the Vail Valley. My sister and her husband, Happy and JP Power, moved to the Vail Valley 15 years ago, and after many years of over-staying our welcome with them, my wife, Paula, and I purchased a home here in 2010.
What strategy do you use to differentiate your business from your competitors? We specialize in helping individual investors and their families preserve and grow their wealth through our proprietary dividend growth investment strategy. This approach enables our clients to benefit from a dependable and growing dividend income stream, which they can either withdraw or reinvest, while building the long-term value of their investment portfolio. Specifically, every client portfolio is initially structured and then actively managed to pursue the following objectives:
• Current portfolio dividend income at yields above the general market indexes;
• Annual portfolio dividend income growth at rates well in excess of inflation;
• Total returns, risk-adjusted, that exceed the general market indexes over time.
What philosophy do you follow in dealing with your customers? What can customers expect from you? Our mission is to serve as a trusted adviser to our clients and to manage their investments in a prudent manner that supports their highest aspirations. Honesty and integrity are the foundation of everything we do, and we are very careful to always place the best interests of our clients ahead of our own. Client portfolios are managed as separately managed accounts; all investments are held in the client's name at an independent custodian — we never take custody of client funds.
We are compensated on a percentage of assets under management — starting at 1 percent annually and scaling down as the amount under management increases.
Tell us a little about your background, education and experience: I have been in the investment business for the past 25-plus years. What I really enjoy is creating lasting relationships with clients and their families, relieving them of the burdens of investing so they can focus on what brings them joy and meaning in their lives.
Originally from Ohio, my love of Colorado began while attending high school at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs. I received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1981 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1985.
After Harvard, I worked as an investment banker at Alex Brown and then started and built a private equity investment business in Cincinnati. We moved to South Carolina in 2001 to be closer to my dad after my mother passed away. I started Verity Investment Partners in 2002 with our partner in Boston, Greg Thomas, who is the CEO of an affiliated investment management firm, ThomasPartners, Inc.
My wife, Paula, serves as our chief operating officer and to the surprise of many couples, we really enjoy working together! My brother, Jon, joined us in 2006 after serving as the CEO of Bank One Trust Company in Chicago. I also serve on the board of American Financial Group which is a Fortune 500 provider of specialty property and casualty insurance and financial services based in Cincinnati.
What is the most humorous thing that has happened to you at your business since you opened? We like to think that we enable our clients to have a lot more laughter in their lives since they have delegated the worrying to us!
