The 10th annual High Country Speaker Series continues its exploration of climate change with scientist Jill Baron, Ph.D., on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Public Library.
Baron, an ecosystem ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and senior research scientist with the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University, will speak about “Observed Climate Change Effects in Colorado with Special Regard to Rocky Mountain National Park” in the second installment of the High Country Speaker Series.
Baron will talk about what has been observed in the Colorado mountains and share results from long-term and continuing research at Rocky Mountain National Park
“The responses to a changing climate are all around us, from beetle infestations of our forests, to earlier emergences of marmots in the spring, to retreating glaciers,” Baron said. “One thing we do know: the onset and continuance of climate change into the next century requires that we all think differently about how to manage our resources than we have in the past.”
The High Country Speaker Series is a partnership between the Eagle Valley Library District and Walking Mountains to bring environmental speakers to our community. Other speakers in this series include:
Feb. 28: Colorado State Climatologist, Nolan Doesken, who will present on “Colorado's Amazing Climate” at the Avon Public Library.
March 14: Richard Stucky, curator of paleoecology and evolution at Denver Museum of Nature and Science, will present “Really Hot and Really Cool Times in the Rocky Mountains” at Walking Mountains Science Center.
The High Country Speaker Series is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended but not required. For more information, or to make a reservation, call the Avon Public Library at 949-6797 or Walking Mountains Science Center at 970-827-9725.
