Beer/wine-making store opens in Gypsum

For all you beer and wine makers, a new supply store - Wine or Wort - is here to save you some trips to Denver.

Beth Reed and her two partners opened March 17 at 150 Cooley Mesa Road, across from Costco and a few doors down from Heidi's Brooklyn Deli in Gypsum.

"Seventy-five percent of the people who walk in here haven't brewed in a long time because it's been so inconvenient to get supplies," Reed said.

Reed herself has only been brewing beer and wine for about a year.

"So far, I just use the kits and it's definitely cheaper," she said. "It works out to about $1 per bottle of beer and $4 or $5 per bottle of wine, and it's easy. If you can follow directions for baking a cake, you can make beer or wine, and you only need a small corner of storage space."

Reed's cousin in Utah introduced her to wine-making and that soon led to beer brewing as well.

"Wine takes much longer than beer to age properly," she said. "We found ourselves drinking our wine before it was ready, so we started making beer in between the wine batches."

It wasn't long before she and her partners realized the lack of supplies for home brewers in Eagle County.

"Until now, people had to order on line or go to Denver," Reed said.

Reed and her partners all work other full-time jobs. Wine or Wort Home Brew Supply is merely a product of their passion.

"We only order things we'd like to have ourselves," she said.

Those things include decorative wine racks, cheese-making kits and more in addition to kegerators, brewing kits and equipment.

The store is also hosting free beer- and wine-making clinics that feature experienced brewers as guest speakers. The first wine-making clinic will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13.

"Anyone who wants to bring their own equipment and brew with us is welcome - it's always more fun to have a party when you're brewing," Reed said.

Wine or Wort's hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. More information can be found at and the store can be reached at (970) 524-BEER (2337).
