EAGLE, Colorado - An Eagle-Vail man is in the Eagle County Jail after allegedly leading police on a high speed chase through Avon and Edwards.
John Thomas Clark, 24, is being held on $30,000 cash bond for a litany of charges stemming from a chase through shopping center parking lots and a residential neighborhood, before he abandoned his car and police ran him down on foot, police said.
"The officers were concerned for the safety of the general public," said Lt. Greg Daly with the Avon Police Department. "His driving behavior could have resulted in injuries to the general public. Fortunately, no citizens were injured from this reckless and dangerous driver."
It started 9:10 p.m. Friday night in Avon when Avon police officer Ed Moran tried to stop a weaving vehicle, police said. Moran tried to pull Clark over at the traffic light at Highway 6 and West Beaver Creek Boulevard.
Instead of pulling over, Clark hit the gas and led police on a chase, according to police.
Before long, Clark was allegedly driving at speeds well above the speed limit.
He headed west along Highway 6 toward Edwards. Moran gave chase and was soon joined by Eagle County Sheriff's Office deputies, the Colorado State Patrol and a Vail police officer.
Clark started taking what police referred to as "evasive maneuvers," ducking in and out of parking lots to try to shake them.
Police say Clark sped through the Riverwalk parking lots, then on into Edwards Village.
He tried his luck at speeding through a residential area in lower Homestead, then back onto Highway 6 and east toward Avon.
Outside Avon's Liftview Apartments, he jumped out of his car and ran, according to authorities. He made it less than 100 yards before officers caught him.
Turns out, Clark was on probation.
He was arraigned Monday in Judge Katharine Sullivan's Eagle County Court on two counts of probation violation, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, violating a restraining order and eluding a police officer.
