Reading Buddies offers summer opportunities

The Eagle Valley Library District and The Literacy Project of Eagle County are collaborating to offer multiple sessions of Reading Buddies this summer.

Reading Buddies is a free reading-enrichment program that pairs trained teen volunteers entering grades nine through 12 with younger children (students entering first through third grades). Reading Buddies meet up once a week to read, play games and do reading-related activities. The Avon Public Library also will offer a summer session for middle school students.

"Typically, Big Buddies are teens who love reading, enjoy working with younger children and want to give back to their community," said Dale Green, who specializes in services for teens at the Eagle Public Library. "This will be our third year offering this successful program at the Eagle Public Library."

All teen volunteers will receive training before and during the program.

The Avon, Eagle and Gypsum libraries will be conducting mandatory training sessions prior to the summer Reading Buddies sessions. Call the appropriate contact numbers for more information. Applications and more information can be found at The Literacy Project's website, www.literacy

Reading Buddies is a partnership project among the Eagle Valley Library District, The Literacy Project and the Friends of the Eagle Valley Library District.
