Editor's note: This is the first in a series of stories profiling some of the artists taking part in the second annual Art on the Rockies, set for July 14 and 15 in Edwards.
A favorite of both local residents and international clientele, artist Pat Matthews entertains not only through his vivid, energetic paintings themselves but through the act of painting, as well. A true showman and inviting conversationalist, Matthews will paint live at Art on the Rockies on July 14 and 15 at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards. He will be featured in the large gallery tent, with artist Sandra Kaplan, from Denver.
Step into his world throughout the course of the day, and steal a glimpse at a masterpiece in progress.
"What I like most about what I do is that I learn something new every day and the sum is always greater than the parts," Matthews said. "The energy that flows out of me when I paint seems to come from sources beyond myself. Drawing most of my inspiration from the outdoors, I often catch myself painting with both hands in an effort to keep up with the spontaneity of expressing the moment."
Matthews' thick, textural application of paint serves to reflect on a moment in life and in light.
Paderewski Fine Art Gallery, of Beaver Creek, is sponsoring the artist in action for the two days of the festival. The free Art on the Rockies festival, located on the campus of Colorado Mountain College in Edwards, will have more than 120 artists, music, children's arts discovery tent and food and wine.
