Artist Jim Cotter part of 'Badges & Buttons, Waistcoats & Vests'

Jim Cotter, local artist, jeweler and owner of the J. Cotter Gallery, was asked to participate in "Badges & Buttons, Waistcoats & Vests," an exhibition curated by Robert Ebendorf and Elizabeth Turrell. Cotter is one of only 25 artists to be included in this very unique show. This show will be at the Velvet Da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco, Calif., now through Aug. 26 and will then travel to the Society of Contemporary Craft in Pittsburg, Pa., where it will be on display from Oct. 5 to Dec. 16.The 25 artists, all from the United States or the United Kingdom, have put together a group of handmade, one-of-a-kind badges and buttons to be displayed on a garment, also provided by the artist. Badges and buttons are being highlighted as a form of brooch that has a stronger message about the wearer than typical jewelry. A badge can display a person's achievements, affiliations, authority and/or beliefs; each worn with a purpose. Cotter applied a series of shields that he had been working on towards this concept. "My feelings are that the shield is a symbol of protection from things that people can't control," he said. "Shields have been used by hunters and warriors throughout the ages, but with the development of technology, shields have transformed into something else. The wearer is conveying strength and protection for each individuals own personal fears and triumphs," he continued. This collection includes shield brooches made from steel and gold leaf as well as painted wood and sterling silver. While this exhibition will be on display until mid December, a collection of Cotter's shield series is available at the J. Cotter Galleries in Vail and Beaver Creek. Shields in a variety of formats (rings, pendants, brooches and earrings) made out of an assortment of materials (from gold with diamonds, steel, wood and sterling silver) are available there.J. Cotter Gallery was established in 1970 in Vail and continues to uphold the tradition of bringing contemporary jewelry and art to the Vail Valley. J. Cotter Gallery can be visited in Vail on Wall Street and in Beaver Creek Village on Market Square.
