My husband and I are part-time residents of Avon. We arrived a week ago to spend two months in this beautiful valley. I am a fan of all sports and each morning as I pick up the Vail Daily I look for anything I can find on the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association). The WNBA is in season and I can find more information about the NBA, which is not in season.
I am very disappointed in the paper for saying absolutely nothing (not even in the box score section), about a professional women's team. I believe this is one reason that many of our professional women's sport teams have been forced to disband. It is hard to promote interest in something you cannot see.
I am a former women's athletic director at a small Minnesota college and have been fighting for equality for women in sport since prior to Title IX (which celebrated its 40th anniversary in June of this year). When is the media going to get its act together and stop reporting only half the story? By the way, for the first time ever there are going to be more women athletes representing the United States in the London Olympics than men.
Women's Foundation of Colorado is hosting an event sponsored by Amanda Precourt, Girl Power and the Vail Daily, showing a film titled "Miss Representation (Gender Bias in the Media - you can't be what you can't see)." I suggest you go see this.
In the meantime, please let me know how my Minnesota LYNX are doing?
