Vail golf course to host July 24 neighborhood meeting

A neighborhood meeting has been scheduled for 1 p.m. July 24 to continue discussions on plans for the golf course clubhouse renovation project. The meeting will be held at the clubhouse, 1778 Sunburst Drive, and will include a project overview and opportunities for neighbors to offer comments and suggestions on an updated site plan and various operational issues.

The meeting is sponsored by the Town of Vail and the Vail Recreation District and follows a decision by the town council at its July 17 meeting to continue to move forward with the renovation design process while working with the neighborhood over the next 30 days to address traffic, noise and other impacts. At that meeting, the council also reviewed and accepted a recommendation by a golf course design consultant to relocate the 18th hole approximately 60 yards west from an earlier realignment recommendation. The green will remain in place throughout the remainder of this season with realignment construction to begin in August, 2013. The golf course, including the clubhouse, is owned by the town, and is leased to the Vail Recreation District for operations.

The clubhouse/Nordic center project has been in the design phase for the past couple of months following voter approval of a ballot issue to use funds that had been previously collected for a conference center on other projects. The golf course project involves a comprehensive remodeling of the existing clubhouse and a modest expansion that will increase its size from approximately 20,000 square feet to approximately 22,000 square feet.

Existing uses of the building including the pro shop, Nordic center, restaurant and cart storage will be maintained, but with improvements to operations, building aesthetics and guest services. A new element of the building will be a community room designed to accommodate up to 200 people for activities including weddings, meetings, receptions and community activities. Historically the golf course restaurant has been able to accommodate up to 140 people for those activities.

Other aspects of the project include increased parking and improved traffic flow through the parking lot, a new staging/welcome area for golfers, landscaping, expanded patios and other site improvements. To date all design work is at a conceptual stage, making this a good time for the neighborhood to offer comments and suggestions.

Details, including current site plan sketches, are available on the town's website, www.vailgov.com.
