Dancing in Vail's streets kicks off dance festival

VAIL - The Vail Valley Foundation's Vail International Dance Festival kick-off week has arrived, and in keeping with tradition, the festival will make its entrance this week with free community dance activities in preparation for the festival's opening night this Sunday.

Dancing in the Streets is an interactive evening of dance and movement free to the community. During these unique events, the artists make their visions come to life by creating a dance experience involving anyone who wants to participate - no dance experience necessary!

On Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., BreakEFX will give complimentary hip-hop dance instructions to Vail dance enthusiasts of all skill levels at the Arrabelle at Vail Square in Lionshead. Following this interactive tutorial, Lindy Roy and Vail Valley Dance Intensive will host an ever-popular ballet barre class, open to the public on Thursday at Solaris Plaza in Vail Village starting at 5:30 p.m.

"Whether you love to learn new dance moves, are trying it out for the first time or simply wish to come and watch, our Dancing in the Streets evenings are an exciting first glimpse at all that the Vail International Dance Festival has to offer," said Martha Brassel, the festival manager. "The festival is about bringing all types of dance and all levels of interest together to celebrate, and Dancing in the Streets truly captures that fun energy and collaborative feel."

BreakEFX, who also performed n Tuesday night at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for the Hot Summer Nights of Dance 8150 Urban Dance Challenge, is Colorado's most sought after dance company for cutting edge urban dance performance. In addition to producing some of the state's leading professionals in performance, choreography and dance instruction, the crew is best known for their local outreach to K-12 schools throughout Colorado. Wednesday's instruction will provide Vail Valley residents and visitors top-of-class instruction appropriate for all ages and ability levels.

On Thursday, the ring encircling Solaris will be transformed into a giant ballet barre as Roy and Vail Dance Intensive teach audience members how to strengthen their muscles and develop their technique. This is sure to be a memorable evening, as one of the newest trends in exercise is transformed into a larger-than life outdoor adventure.

VVF's Vail International Dance Festival, which kicks off July 29 and ends Aug. 11, offers an unparalleled collection of ballet and modern dance, rivaling the top dance festivals across the globe. This year's lineup includes the return of New York City Ballet MOVES, the Vail debut of Martha Graham Dance Company, International Evenings of Dance, Dance for $20.12 and more. The Dance Festival's free public Dancing in the Streets events will continue throughout the two-week period, with line dancing with Lindy Roy and Chad Schiro on Aug. 1 and square dancing with Martha Graham Dance Company on Aug. 8, both at the Arrabelle.
