New walking tour guide details Eagle’s history

A century ago, a rancher coming into the town for the weekend might stop at the Silver Eagle barbershop downtown for a haircut. A meal and a bed could be found at the Duncan Hotel, located in the triangle of land at the north end of Broadway. And if a fellow were thirsty, he could grab a drink at the Eagle Saloon, an establishment with a reputation for rowdiness that prompted the locals to dub it the “Bucket of Blood Saloon.”Learn about these buildings with the Eagle Walking Tour booklet, now available for purchase at the Nearly Everything Store, the Mountain Pedaler, the Eagle Visitor Center and the Eagle County Historical Museum. The booklet, produced by the Eagle County Historical Society, features 17 historic sites in Old Town Eagle along with information about the original uses of the buildings and the people who used them. The booklet offers a map and information for a self-guided walking tour of the historic sites.ECHS President Kathy Heicher noted that the revised booklet offers new information about the town’s history, including the location of the train depot, the Chevrolet dealership that was located in the heart of town, and the woman who first operated the telephone exchange on Broadway.“We also unraveled the mystery of how the concrete block “Sears” houses in town were built,” Heicher noted, “The booklet is a great resource for local history buffs.” Several months of research went into its production.Publication of the booklet was made possible through the support of the town of Eagle, Wendy Sacks, Hitching Post Bed & Breakfast, Jerome Butters CPA, Woodland & Associates, Wells Fargo Bank, Stockman’s Land Exchange, Old Kentucky Tavern, Bonfire Brewing, Mountain Pedaler Bike Shop, Eagle Valley Realty and Eagle Valley Printing.
