Author Jennifer Gilbert set to speak at Literacy Project event

AVON - The Literacy Project, a nonprofit organization with a mission to eliminate illiteracy in Eagle County, will hold its annual author luncheon on Aug. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at The Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa. This year's event features Jennifer Gilbert, author of the celebrated memoir "I Never Promised You a Goodie Bag," will speak.

As the most significant fundraiser of the year, the annual author luncheon and silent auction accounts for 25 percent of the Literacy Project's annual budget. Gilbert has been featured in national publications such as People magazine, Vanity Fair, O Magazine, Marie Claire and has appeared on "The Today Show." A successful event planner in New York City, Gilbert's memoir describes her journey after a brutal attack and the bold career move that gave her a reason to celebrate again. Her story is a fascinating tale of how one can regain joy in the aftermath of unspeakable horror, packed with hilarious stories of "bridezillas" and demented captains of industry.

"Each year we strive to bring authors with a positive message to our annual luncheon," said Colleen Gray, executive director of The Literacy Project. "We're excited to welcome Jennifer Gilbert to the Vail Valley for both her inspirational story and signature humor. It's going to be a fantastic event."

The Literacy Project will celebrate its 22nd year in Eagle County this year, continuing its mission of eliminating illiteracy in the community. During 2012 alone, The Literacy Project will offer literacy education services to 500 Eagle County adult and youth learners, each of whom will receive an individualized education evaluation, learning plan and free, confidential one-on-one tutoring plan.

Tickets for the author luncheon are $125 per person and include a hardback copy of Gilbert's memoir; tables of 10 seats are also available for sale. Purchase tickets by calling 970-949-5026 or visit www.literacyprojecteaglecounty.org.
