Edwards woman enters commissioner race

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado - Courtney Holm is going from zero to full-campaign in what seems like a matter of moments.

County Republicans Monday submitted Holm, a local attorney, as a replacement candidate for Eagle County Commissioner in District 2. She'll try to unseat incumbent Democrat Jon Stavney of Eagle. Holm replaces Shayne Mitchell, who withdrew from the race following a July 15 incident incident that resulted in misdemeanor charges of child abuse, third-degree assault, menacing and domestic violence following an incident involving his ex-wife and their daughter.

Holm said she hadn't really thought about running for office until she was approached. After pondering the idea, she submitted her name to the vacancy committee. After an interview, group members believed they'd found the right person for the job.

"She met with six of us in a room, and by the end of the interview, we really felt we knew what she was about," Eagle County Republican Party Chairwoman Kaye Ferry said. "She knows what she wants to accomplish."

Holm has lived most of her life in the Vail Valley - her parents moved here in 1969. She's a graduate of Colorado State University, and earned her law degree at the University of Denver. She's a member of the Colorado Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Foundation, and is president of the Continental Divide Bar Association.

Holm said running for county commissioner is an opportunity to help guide the future of the place she grew up. And, she added, she's undaunted by the prospect of facing an incumbent in the race.

"I want to get a lot of different issues out there," she said.

While she's still pulling together specifics of her campaign, Holm said her list of issues includes promoting growth and development that helps maintain and create jobs, and wise use of taxpayer money.

"These are tough times," Holm said. "We need to be responsible."
