The house at 530 Cotton Ranch Drive is transitioning from a private residence to a public building.
At the regular meeting Aug. 14, members of the Gypsum Town council approved buying the property for $200,000. The deal is a short sale. The tentative closing date is Sept. 15.
"We have wanted to have the ranch house because of its more logical location as a start for the golf course," said Gypsum Council member Tom Edwards. "It is closer to the first tee and therefore probably a better place to get people started off from. It would also, therefore, become the logical place to have the pro shop."
If it goes through, the purchase opens up other possibilities with the Gypsum Creek Golf Club House. That could allow the town to possibly make alterations in the future that would make the club house more attractive for larger events. That could include separate meeting rooms or small dining rooms for private uses and events.
Gypsum Council member Tim McMichael added that the current maintenance facility for Gypsum Creek Golf Course is small and some of those offices might move into the new building as well.
"The council had agreed some time ago to purchase this if we could get it for the price we are purchasing it for now," Edwards said. "After close to a year, we have the opportunity to buy it for what we felt was a reasonable price and so we are going ahead with the purchase."
The town bought the golf course and club house in 2010 for $2.5 million after it went into foreclosure in 2009. The facility was formerly known as the Cotton Ranch Golf Club.
Since taking over in 2010, the town has shouldered numerous upgrades. The locker rooms, swimming pool and parts of the course, including the grass and a water feature, all needed significant attention.
With the bulk of the work complete, Gypsum officials believe the golf course is a feather in the town's cap. The municipal course offers 18 holes with a cart for $49, and the town uses the property for events such as Oktoberfest on the Green, which is slated for Sept. 29 this year.
