Worldwide Cardboard Challenge comes to Minturn

MINTURN - This fall, the Global Cardboard Challenge invites the world to build anything awesome out of cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. Cardboard Challenge events can be of any scale and are being planned around the world. The Vail Valley event will take place in Minturn. The Cardboard Challenge is Saturday at Magustos, 101 Main Street, Minturn, from noon to 4 p.m.

"Come out to play, celebrate creativity and imagination," said Jodi Jahrling, executive director of the Minturn Community Fund (MCF). "Eric (owner of Magustos) stopped in and showed me the 11-minute short film that inspired the event (www.cardboardchallenge.com) and we decided this would be fun to do in our community."

Magustos, in partnership with the Minturn Community Fund, are hosting the event. Basic materials (cardboard, tape, scissors, and markers) for building will be provided - participants are welcome to bring additional recycled items to use. Kids will have three hours to make their creations and the last hour will be for viewing the creations. The event is inspired by cardboard arcade games, but any creation with cardboard is welcome.

Kids are also welcome to bring a cardboard creation to the event, so it's encouraged to work on this project leading up to the event as well. Magustos is already in the process of collecting cardboard. So stop by if you'd like to start working on your project now. No minimum or maximum age requirements to enter your creation - kids of all ages are welcome - even kids at heart.

"We do have a limited space, so let us know if you're coming to build or plan on bringing a completed piece to display," Jahrling said.

The event is free. Spectators will have an opportunity to view the making and completion of the creations too. A donation box will also be on site where proceeds will benefit future events like this one.

"Anything that brings the community together is what we are all about," Jahrling said. "It's great that our businesses want to do the same."
