The lockout is on for the National Hockey League but that doesn't mean that local aficionados must abandon viewing their sport of choice.
And they don't have to go far to get their fix.
This season the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks have designated the Eagle Ice Rink as their home base. The university club team will play 12 games in Eagle this winter.
"This is good hockey, college level, and you can't watch the Av's this year," said Sheryl Staten, Eagle area manager for the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District. "They want to get as many people into the games as possible."
The Mavericks will open their 2012-13 season Friday, Oct. 19, when they face off against Western State College. Game time is 7 p.m. The second part of the weekend doubleheader is planned Saturday, Oct. 20, when the teams hit the ice at 5 p.m.
After their home opener, the Mavericks won't be back in Eagle until 2013, when they face Metropolitan State University on Jan. 11 and 12. The Western State skaters will be back in Eagle on Jan 25 and 26, and the University of New Mexico comes to town Feb. 15 and 16. The home season will conclude March 1 and 2 with games against Colorado School of Mines.
Even when the Mavericks aren't in town, there will be a lot of action at the Eagle Ice rink in the coming weeks.
"From Halloween through the second week in December, we have tournaments lined up," said Staten. "We are going to be jammin'."
Staten noted that the upcoming women's tournament will feature teams from Denver and Utah, and the youth tournaments will include kids from all over Colorado.
Here's the schedule:
• Oct. 27-28 - Women's Stick or Treat Tournament
• Nov. 3-4. 10-11 and 17-18 - Vail Sportsmanship Tournament
• Nov. 24-25 - Battle for the Bird 3 on 3 Tournament
