Vail building permits up slightly

VAIL, Colorado - Third quarter building permits issued by the town of Vail were up slightly in 2012 compared to 2011, according to statistics released by the Community Development Department. There were 210 building permits issued during the third quarter this year compared to 207 issued for the same period a year ago. Year-to-date, the number of building permits has totaled 448 in 2012, down 10 percent compared to 497 recorded for the three quarters in 2011.

While valuations and fees collected for the third quarter were down from 2011, year to date figures are running ahead of 2011 with $63 million in building valuation recorded compared to $51 million for the same period in 2011. Year-to-date building fees collected are over $2.1 million, up nearly 30 percent from the same period in 2011 when $1.6 million was collected. Much of the increase in building permit valuation and fees collected is attributed to the 17 building permits issued for new single family or duplex homes thus far in 2012.

The department has processed 497 design review and planning applications for the first three quarters of 2012, down slightly from the 555 applications recorded for the same period a year ago.

Overall, Community Development Director George Ruther says the building permit and planning valuation increases reflect the upward trend in real estate activity in Vail.

The Community Development Department continues to make improvements to the development review process for increased efficiency, officials said in a press release. Seven building permit types, such as residential re-roofs and window replacements, may now be applied for and issued over-the-counter while a customer waits.-
