Fancher, Reynolds lead in Avon council race

AVON, Colorado - The Avon Town Council will have some new faces by the end of the month.

After a day of steady, if not busy, polling-place voting, Jennie Fancher was the leading vote-getter in the race, with Matt Gennett and Jake Wolf battling for the last of the three seats available.

Incumbent Buz Reynolds, who has served several terms in the 30-plus years since the town was founded, was successful in his bid for another term. Reynolds had earned the second-most votes in the election, according to preliminary figures released Tuesday by the Eagle County Clerk and Recorder's Office.

Council members Kristi Ferraro and Amy Phillips, both of whom had served two consecutive terms and were ineligible to run for a third, are leaving the board.

Fancher earned the most votes, 804, with Wolf and Gennett separated by four votes.

Reynolds and the newcomers will join Rich Carroll, Chris Evans, Todd Goulding and Dave Dantas.

The next council will have plenty of work to do.

The current council has spent countless hours and more than a year trying to settle a pair of lawsuits with the developers of the Village at Avon subdivision. Those lawsuits date back to 2009. The council has scheduled a special meeting today for a second, and final, vote on the settlement package. That package includes numerous changes to the original 1998 land-use approval for the 1,800-acre subdivision.

Even if the current council votes to approve the deal, new council members will still have to do quite a bit of follow-up work on the project, and some neighbors of the Village at Avon property have started talking about taking the settlement agreement to court themselves.

Even if the current council gets the settlement agreement done, the next iteration of the council will have more work to do with the developers, finalizing plans for the commercial and residential areas of the Village at Avon.
