Vail Daily letter: Well, perhaps

Congratulations Americans! As a group we soundly rejected extremism, greed, trickle-down economics and a candidate who wouldn't reveal his plan or his tax history.

Perhaps now the Republican Party will come to its senses and quit pandering to its most radical elements. Perhaps the Republican Party will realize that women and women's issues must be respected and not criminalized. Perhaps the Republican Party will accept that rightwing religious men do not have the right to control women's health care decisions, and it will acknowledge that women must have sovereignty over their bodies.

Perhaps the Republican Party will realize that the power of sane, rational people will beat out moneyed interests. Perhaps the Republican Party will acknowledge that educational opportunities are critical for the future of this great country.

Perhaps the Republican Party will realize that there are significant environmental issues that we must address with courage and creativity rather that ignoring them. Perhaps the Republican Party will realize investment in clean energy is critical to the health of the planet. Perhaps the Republican Party will acknowledge the importance of science.

Perhaps the Republican Party will realize that this country is no longer the domain of the white male, that its strength has always come from being a melting pot and that it continues to be so even if the people arriving have a different skin color. Finally, and most importantly, perhaps the Republican Party will realize that it would be a good idea to negotiate in good faith with the Democrats to help solve the enormous problems facing us.
