It's official: Wolf wins Avon council seat

AVON, Colorado - After more than a week of uncertainty, Jake Wolf has officially won a seat on the Avon Town Council.

Three seats on the council were available this fall. Current council members Kristi Ferraro and Amy Phillips are leaving due to the town's term-limit law, and incumbent Buz Reynolds was running for a second term.

Reynolds was re-elected with the second-most votes, 827. Candidate Jennie Fancher earned the most votes, 831. In the early-morning hours of Nov. 7, it looked like Wolf had won the third seat, but by a scant four votes over Matt Gennett.

Eagle County Clerk and Recorder Teak Simonton and her staff then had to count the remaining late and "provisional" ballots - votes cast at polling places by people who had received mail ballots.

The vote totals were certified Thursday, and the final count put Wolf into the third council seat by seven votes. While that's a tiny margin, it's still outside the state laws that would trigger a mandatory recount. According to an e-mail from Simonton, a three-vote spread would have required a recount. But, she added, candidates can request a recount at their own expense, which would be between $1,200 and $1,500.
