Charitable Fund aids local residents with medical crises

Editor's note: The Vail Daily is running a series of articles on nonprofits that are participating in Colorado Gives Day on Dec. 4.

Take a moment to imagine the impact that a catastrophic illness or injury would have on you, your family and your job. Now imagine that the financial implications of your diagnosis were so overwhelming that you were forced to choose between your treatment, your home and the basic needs of your family.

Even the most responsible, well-insured adult can face financial ruin when dealing with a serious illness. Medical crises are the most common cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States. Financial barriers frequently stand in the way of focused medical treatment and recovery.

The Vail Valley Charitable Fund was created in 1996 to help local individuals in medical crisis. During the past 16 years, it has raised and distributed more than $6 million to more than 1,000 local individuals and families in need. The Vail Valley Charitable Fund also negotiates discounts, sets up payment plans, pays down financial obligations to a manageable level and helps cover the cost of routine living expenses. The organization's help allows those in crisis to focus their attention on healing. They offer hope, but we cannot do it alone.

Last year, the Vail Valley Charitable Fund raised $400,000 to assist 100 local residents battling cancer and chronic illnesses as well as the effects of stroke, premature birth and severe injuries. Consider a tax-deductible donation to the Vail Valley Charitable Fund to ensure that they will be here to help you, your neighbor, your colleague or your friend when you need them most.
