Vail Daily letter: Old clubhouse deal should still stand

I've been following the Vail Golf Course clubhouse issue as it's been making its way through the various hearings and meetings, and I have to say I'm disappointed in the town's position here.

First off, there's a 30-year-old agreement that the original owners of the land made with the town when they leased the land for the golf course.

That agreement said that you could build a clubhouse, but only a clubhouse or other golf- or recreation-related facilities. But now the town wants to turn the golf clubhouse into an event center with banquet room, outdoor event areas, a "bride's room" and other non-golf related uses.

Second, in public meetings the previous mayor and Vail Town Council members promised that any clubhouse renovation would take place within the footprint of the existing building. But when you look at the plans, you see an expanded building, additional patios and a new lawn area designated for event use as well.

Lastly, in 2005 the citizens of Vail recognized that building a new conference-event center was a money-losing proposition and voted against increasing taxes to fund the project, effectively ending it.

Through the election late last year concerning what to do with previously raised tax monies, we as a town voted to redo and upgrade the clubhouse, but we sure didn't vote to go ahead and build an event center anyway. It seems like the town is trying to back door this project in.

I'm looking forward to the Vail Town Council upholding its agreements from the past, keeping the word of previous councils, and honoring the intent of community elections.
