Vail gallery celebrates first anniversary

VAIL, Colorado - The Shelton Smith Collection is celebrating its first anniversary Sunday with a special exhibition of one-of-a-kind Christmas treasures.

"As we celebrate our first anniversary in Vail, we are thankful for our many blessings and all the new friends we have made from all over the world," said owner Shelton Smith. "During the past year we have placed great art in some of the finest homes in the Vail Valley and more than a dozen different states. Vail has become a world-class art center and we are delighted to be here and be part of it."

While Smith's gallery is only a year old, he and his family have been Vail regulars since the early 1970s.

For the holidays the gallery is showing several special items, including a rare King James Bible printed in 1639.

"This is an almost 400-year-old treasure in excellent condition, seldom seen outside of a museum," Smith said.

The gallery is also exhibiting the original, three-volume set of Bill Wittliff's 1987 screenplay for the motion picture "Lonesome Dove."

Artists on display in the gallery include G. Harvey, Martin Grelle, Bill Anton, Curt Walters, Americo Makk, Robert Wood, Jim Norton and G. Russell Case.

The Shelton Smith Collection is located at the Covered Bridge on Bridge Street in Vail Village. To learn more, call 970-476-0100 or go to www.sheltonsmith.com.
