The J. Cotter galleries host "Au Courant: A Contemporary Earring Exhibition" now through the end of the season. Nine artists from across the country have been invited to participate in this exciting exhibition. Each was chosen for their unique use of techniques and materials to create masterful earring designs.
The artists featured are Cheryl Eve Acosta, Kristine Bolhuis, Allyson Bone, Caroline Gore, Misato Iijima, Masumi Kataoka, Katie Poterala, Kristi Sword and Amy Tavern. They each bring something distinctive to the exhibition. Traditional materials are used, such as silver, gold and stones, but concrete, enamel and leather can be found in these works as well. The very unique handlings of these materials, such as ball chain inlayed in enamel and the use of 3D modeling software to create intense details, will impress and surprise many viewers.
The curator of this show, Theresa Hauser, describes it as a collection of work that is on the cutting edge of contemporary art jewelry.
"These artists, some of whom are very established in the metalsmithing world and some of whom are up-and-comers, use techniques, materials and processes that are both intriguing and alluring," she said. "These stand out with innovation even amongst our already expert and modern collection of jewelry artists."
Jim Cotter, local artist, jeweler and owner of the J.Cotter Gallery, is enthusiastic about this exhibition as well.
"It is always wonderful to work with new artists and be able to showcase and bring contemporary metalsmithing to our galleries' audience," he said. "I believe very deeply in supporting the art jewelry field and spreading our knowledge and passion on to our clients and friends."
"Au Courant" will be on display at the J. Cotter Gallery in the Vail Village and on Gallery Row in Beaver Creek for the duration of the winter or until the collection is depleted.
