Eagle County business helps older residents

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado - Visiting Angels, a national provider of assisted living services for seniors, has opened its newest franchise in Eagle County. The local business, owned and operated by Judson Haims, a long-time Eagle County resident, provides non-medical home care to help elderly and older adults continue to live in their homes. Visiting Angels serves Eagle, Garfield, and Pitkin counties.

Haims said he had noticed a gap in services for seniors in many mountain communities, and became aware of an exodus of seniors from the community.

"With no skilled nursing facilities and few, if any, senior-specific medical providers, seniors have been leaving our Vail Valley for Denver, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, and places where their children live," Haims said.

Haims learned about Visiting Angels while looking for opportunities to fill the gap in senior services. His research showed that a rapidly aging population, coupled with the rising costs of nursing home care and depleted retirement funds, has created a need for in-home elderly care.

Besides older county residents, Visiting Angels also helps guests.

"When visitors come to vacation in our valley, sometimes there may be a child, adult, or senior that may require some additional help," Haims said. "There are also many people that come to our valley for our outstanding orthopedic services. Unfortunately, I have been somewhat of a 'frequent flyer' at the Steadman Clinic, Vail Summit Orthopedics, and the Vail Valley Medical Center. I know all too well that after a surgical procedure, it is imperative to follow-up with physical therapy and the doctor. How to get to the doctors' office, having someone help at home with meal preparation, chores, and exercise, is very difficult unless there is someone able to stay at home to assist. This is where Visiting Angels shines."

Haims said Visiting Angels has been a great source of training and support, providing ideas, marketing programs and information about how to best serve clients.

Our job is to lessen their burden, and provide their families with peace of mind, and a way to let Mom or Dad continue to live in the home they have grown to love over the years," Haims said.

Visiting Angels' office is at 120 East Third St. in Eagle. To learn more, call 970-328-5526 or go to www.visitingangels.com/comtns.
