Vail Daily obituary: Scott McGoodwin, 1950-2012

Scott McGoodwin was born in San Antonio, Texas, on May 20, 1950, the third son of James "Jim" McGoodwin and Parthenia "Tina" Wait McGoodwin.

It was in San Antonio that Scott's love of animals became evident, including his affinity for black Labs and his love of horses. High school years in Houston included many days when Scott and his friends loaded their surfboards and headed to the beach.

While taking classes at University of Texas in Austin, Scott also indulged in rock climbing, investing in a collection of ropes and carabiners. He became adept at photography and acquired cameras and darkroom equipment. Whatever Scott became interested in, he threw himself into wholeheartedly until he had mastered it.

The 1970s saw Scott moving to Colorado, living in Salida and Boulder before settling in Eagle County. It was here that Scott became adept at both downhill and cross-country skiing while continuing his adventures on lakes and rivers, canoeing and learning to kayak. Scott was an avid hiker and outdoorsman who encouraged a love of nature in his children.

Scott was also a seeker of truth and a man of courage. A devoted family man, Scott believed his children were his greatest legacy. He died Nov. 16 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Tracy Cameron; his children James and Katherine "Kate" McGoodwin; his brothers, James Russell "Russ" McGoodwin of Boulder, Michael (Rebecca) McGoodwin of Seattle and their children Nat McGoodwin, Megan McGoodwin, Wendy McGoodwin, and Christie (Kong) Cheung and baby Emily Rebecca.

No services will be held. The McGoodwin family will host a celebration of Scott's life in May at their home. Contact them at PO Box 394, Eagle, CO 81631.
