EAGLE, Colorado - Eagle County Environmental Health and Public Health Departments, in conjunction with Energy Smart, have free radon test kits available while supplies last. January is National Radon Action Month and a perfect time for people to test their homes for radon, a radioactive gas responsible for hundreds of Colorado cancer deaths each year.
The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas enters homes from the ground and accumulates unless properly vented. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in smokers. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, between one-third and one-half of Colorado homes have radon in excess of recommended safe levels.
Free radon test kits can be obtained from the county's Environmental Health Department at 500 Broadway in Eagle and at the El Jebel Community Center at 0020 Eagle County Drive in El Jebel. Or, call Energy Smart at 970-328-8777 to schedule a home energy assessment.-
