Vail, Beaver Creek ski patrols to hold avalanche seminar

VAIL, Colorado- On Wednesday at 7 p.m. the Vail and Beaver Creek ski patrols will present the second session of their Eagle County Avalanche Awareness Series at the Vail Cascade Resort to educate the community about snow and avalanche safety.

The evening will focus on topics including the state of the area's current snowpack, the human factor of avalanches and decision making in the backcountry, as well as avalanche case studies presented. Special guests will include Kevin Kelble from Flight For Life who will talk about protecting yourself if ever involved in an avalanche, and U.S. Forest Service members Don Dressler and Jeff Thompson, who will discuss ski area boundaries and backcountry access gates.

"Members of the Vail and Beaver Creek Ski Patrols started this program as a way to educate the community on snow safety and to hopefully encourage continued education," said Caroline Stone, a sixth-year Vail ski patroller. "We know that people have been accessing the backcountry for years and we want to help ensure that they have the right knowledge and education to make informed decisions once they leave the ski area boundaries."

Guests are also encouraged to arrive early for pizza and soft drinks donated by Vendetta's as well as an opportunity to check out information booths by Vail and Beaver Creek Ski Patrol, Backcountry Access, Friends of CAIC (Colorado Avalanche Information Center), Weston Snowboards and more. The session will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

The event is free to the community and free parking is available in the Vail Cascade parking structure.

The third and fourth sessions of the Eagle County Avalanche Awareness Series are scheduled to take place on Feb. 13 and March 13.
