Resolving to eat more locally and healthy in 2013 is easy at The Edwards Winter Market - a new local food market happening Sundays through March that sells fresh produce, eggs, storage fruit, wild salmon, goat cheese, grass-fed meats, jerkies and more.
Get the ingredients to make a healthy meal at home, or there are vendors selling prepared foods like soups, breads, nuts, candies, pastas, pies, cookies and pastries. So come hungry and stay for lunch. And to round out the offerings, there are some artisan, jewelry and craft vendors, too.
Osage Gardens, a family-owned-and-operated farm on the Colorado River in New Castle, grows food year round, specializing in organically grown culinary herbs and vegetables. Osage offers a "free choice" Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at the Edwards market. Instead of a pre-selected box of produce, like most CSAs, you select a share that suits your budget, $20-$30 a week for example, and then each week you get to shop at their stand. Maybe you want to make butternut squash soup this week and kale quinoa pilaf the next. Osage grows all the fixings for both.
Local Kaleb Walker of Kaleb's Katch, who founded the market, sells his catches from Bristol Bay, Alaska, at the market, including wild king and sockeye salmon.
Jumpin' Good Goat Dairy is there from Buena Vista selling several different kinds of goat cheese, including feta, ricotta and wine soaked cheddar.
Two ranchers - Colorado River Ranch and Roan Creek Ranch - are there to sell grass-fed beef.
JaJaBelles, selling homemade Greek Pastries, and Dan the Mountain Man Fruit and Nut Co. , selling nut, fruit and candy mixes, are among the vendors offering prepared treats. Magpies is there selling homemade pies.
