What if an entire community read the same book and then gathered together, in groups large and small, to talk about it?
Last year, hundreds of local residents participated in the inaugural One Book, One Valley community-wide reading campaign. The selected book was "Doc" by Mary Doria Russell. Book clubs throughout the area discussed the piece of historical fiction and The Bookworm of Edwards hosted a special evening with "Doc," a Doc Holliday portrayalist, and author Mary Doria Russell capped off a string of related events with a reading and presentation at the Colorado Mountain College, Edwards campus.
Once again, a group of local organizations are collaborating to offer a One Book, One Valley community-wide reading campaign. One Book, One Valley is a collaborative effort by the Bookworm of Edwards, Colorado Mountain College, Eagle Valley Library District and the town of Vail Public Library.
"The One Book, One Valley initiative began with the simple idea of a valleywide community read, which I had and then shared with my colleagues at the Eagle Valley Library District, Colorado Mountain College and The Bookworm of Edwards," said Lori A. Barnes, town librarian at Vail Public Library. "The intent of the initiative is to encourage literacy and to promote a sense of community by sharing a common topic for conversation."
The selected book will be announced by town representatives Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. at the Bookworm of Edwards. The following local dignitaries will attend: Anuschka Bales, trustee from Red Cliff; George Brodin, mayor pro-tem of Minturn; Andy Daly, mayor of Vail; Todd Goulding, mayor pro-tem of Avon; Sara Fisher, Eagle County commissioner; and Yuri Kostick, mayor of Eagle.
Mention One Book, One Valley and receive The Bookworm's bookclub discount of 10 percent on the selected book, which is available in paperback, hardcover, Spanish and audio. The Bookworm will also offer cafe specials in celebration of the chosen book.
Join in the discussion and look for upcoming announcements on programs and events related to the book selection.
