Alpenglow art and children's storytime at Vail library

This year's Triumph Winterfest event at the Vail Public Library is titled Alpenglow. Alpenglow is the soft, beautiful light reflected at sunrise or sunset from mountain peaks into the shadowed valleys. Working in collaboration with the town of Vail's Art in Public Places, the library is offering a children's event on Saturday to celebrate the season of light.

"We are excited by the fresh idea for this year's Triumph Winterfest, said children's librarian Cricket Pylman. "We have been a participant in the Triumph Winterfest for the past few years, offering storytelling at the site of the snow sculptures on Gore Creek Promenade. This year, we are bringing our event home to the library. We will enjoy the late afternoon Alpenglow from the library's lovely patio along the Gore Creek."

This free event will-start in the library's community room at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Children ages 3 to 12 and their parents-will enjoy some good books and an art project. The art project will be making luminarias, the traditional Southwestern and Mexican Christmas candles set in a paper bag. These are often found lighting the streets during winter festivals. After the crafts are completed, the group will gather on the library's outdoor patio to enjoy the light, play some games in the snow, and enjoy hot chocolate and other special treats. Be sure to dress warmly in snow clothes and mittens.

After the event, participants are encouraged to visit the Gore Creek Promenade in Vail Village to view the sixth annual Triumph Winterfest exhibition AlpenGLOW. The exhibit is comprised of more than 15 illuminated lantern-inspired ice sculptures. At sunset, the area transforms into a multi-colored radiant outdoor space.

This event is free and recommended for children ages 3-12. Adult supervision is required. For more information, visit www.vaillibrary.com or call 970-479-2187.
