VAIL - Battle Mountain found a line Friday night.
Struggling for goals in three tight losses in the last week, Huskies hockey coach Gary Defina put seniors Karl Norris, Ben Hymes and Bjorn Bredeson on the same shift and they produced the first two goals in a 3-1 victory over Cherry Creek at Dobson Arena.
"It's a line now," Huskies coach Gary Defina said.
In the last week, Battle Mountain had dropped three-straight decisions by scores of 2-1, 3-1 and 3-2.
"Last week, we weren't generating enough offense," Defina said. "The goaltending ad defense were fine. We were keeping high-scoring teams down to two or three goals. I don't like loading up a line like that. But I felt I had to do it to generate some offense."
There you go, Coach, and we will be accepting new nicknames for the line.
"It's good," Bredeson said. "We have great offensive skills. We work hard in the defensive zone."
Said skills were on display on a power-play goal with 9:43 left in the first period. Bredeson and Hymes set it up and Norris put it home, going top shelf from the right side.
Goal No. 2 was the highlight of the night. Norris sprung Hymes and Bredeson into the Bruins' zone. Hymes came down the left. Cherry Creek goalie David Fessenden drifted over to the left and that isolated Bredeson far post for a beautiful pass and an emphatic finish.
Bredeson's eye's got wide when he saw Hymes' pass.
"They were wide open," he joked. "I was stoked."
"That was key after those losses last week," Defina said. "We needed to come out really hard on them on home ice and make a statement. We did that pretty well."
Clayton Davis scored in the second for the Huskies on a wicked wrister, and Battle Mountain upped its Foothills Conference record to 2-6 and is 4-7-1 overall.
And though the Huskies are 2-6 in conference, there's a lot of hockey to go - seven games, to be precise, starting with a road game at Mullen Wednesday. A bit of a run could get Battle Mountain in the playoff picture.
"It's a goal," Defina said. "You set your goal. You obviously want to make the playoffs. The seniors want to. That's for darn sure."
