Vail Daily letter: Um, not quite

As predicted, President Obama and his flock of liberals have made a major move toward gun control in his second term.

Sadly, they are offering up opinion as fact to try and build more support for their attack on the Bill of Rights.

Take a recent letter in the Vail Daily from Mary Davies, of Edwards. She claims we need more "common sense" laws regarding such things as "automatic assault weapons."

Perhaps Mary should educate herself on the current laws before penning a letter to the masses.

There already is complete regulation of automatic weapons under the National Firearms Act of 1968.

A citizen of the United States cannot just go and buy an automatic firearm. They have to get approval through the federal government via the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Per the National Firearms Act, any unauthorized person caught with such a firearm "may be fined up to $250,000, and imprisoned up to 10 years, or both. In addition, any vessel, vehicle or aircraft used to transport, conceal or possess an unregistered firearm is subject to seizure and forfeiture, as is the weapon itself."

She also states that "common sense" laws were "the law of the land for years until repealed in the mid-1990s."

Wrong again.

There weren't magazine restrictions until President Clinton signed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban in 1994. The ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision.

Prior to its expiration, experts provided statistical evidence that concluded the 1994 ban did nothing to reduce crime. It was nothing but another feel-good measure so people like Davies could sit in their homes feeling safe from the world, knowing their neighbors' gun now only held 10 rounds instead of 11.

There is no such thing as "gun violence." These are buzz words liberals use to scare people into signing petitions. There is only "violence."

And perhaps the liberals should realize that common sense usually starts with an education of the facts.
