Fire damages building in Vail

VAIL, Colorado - A residential complex in West Vail sustained damage in a fire early Monday morning, but no one was hurt.

At approximately 12:21 a.m., Vail Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to 2821 Basingdale Blvd. in the Intermountain subdivision for a report of a chimney fire. One of the occupants reported flames on the roof.

Vail responded with two engines and a ladder truck. The first arriving unit was on scene about a minute and a half after leaving the West Vail Station. A full first alarm assignment was requested, bringing in two additional engines and a battalion chief from Eagle River Fire Protection District.

Fire damage was limited to one of the units, the attic and the roof structure. Water damage extended to the other three units. Estimated dollar loss is unavailable.

Firefighters faced a particularly difficult challenge due to a double roof. Fire spread from the chimney into an attic space and through a portion of an old roof. A new roof had been installed over the old one, creating an opportunity for fire to spread through a concealed combustible space.

Vail Police Department and Eagle County Ambulance District assisted at the scene. Vail Public Works Department assisted with ice removal from the street after the fire was extinguished.

There are four units in this complex and all four were affected by the fire and smoke.

No injuries were reported, but two people sleeping in the unit next door were awakened by firefighters and escorted from the building. The occupant who reported the fire evacuated on her own. All three persons were displaced for the night. Red Cross was contacted to assist with temporary housing.
