Government tracker: Vail works on event funding

Board: Vail Town Council, Feb. 26 council retreat.

Present: Mayor Andy Daly and council members Ludwig Kurz, Kerry Donovan, Margaret Rogers, Susie Tjossem, Kevin Foley and Greg Moffet.

What they talked about: Council members spent much of the morning session talking about spending priorities. One of those discussions involved how to contribute to the town's many events, and how the town's Commission on Special Events.

The discussion centered primarily around how to define the town's "iconic" events - including the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival - and how to start "research and development" funding on new events.

Daly said those new events - which could include events promoting "health and well-being," a top priority for some council members - might not meet the commission's criteria for funding.

After a good bit of discussion - including just what defines an "iconic" event - the council decided to let staff work on the project.

What's next? Town Manager Stan Zemler and other staff members will work on a plan that will every year evaluate what events the town will absolutely fund, and how to develop a separate mechanism for supporting existing events, new events and one-time projects such as the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships.
