BEAVER CREEK - For more than eight years, Cirque Mechanics has been spinning ageless stories in mid-air with their original mechanical wonders. On Thursday, audience members will see how a woeful widget factory becomes a frolicsome funhouse in Birdhouse Factory at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.
Founded in 2004, this uniquely American circus company combines traditional circus disciplines with cirque elements to tell "real world" tales with theatricality. However, it is the design and exploration of innovative mechanical contraptions and the relationship between performer and the machines that truly make Cirque Mechanics exceptional.
Created and directed by Chris Lashua, originator of the German Wheel in Cirque du Soleil, and featuring veterans of the Pickle Family and Moscow Circuses, Birdhouse Factory uses a decidedly fresh aesthetic to showcase their high-flying talent. This critically acclaimed production has wowed audiences worldwide with their Broadway performances, U.S. tour and European tour.
Although inspired by modern circus, Birdhouse Factory was influenced in part by the masterful industry murals of Mexican artist Diego Rivera, the outrageous illustrations of cartoonist Rube Goldberg, and the slap-stick style humor of Charlie Chaplin's film "Modern Times." The performances display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus, which makes the message timeless and relevant.
"Without a doubt, Cirque Mechanics is one of the most brilliant and entertaining circus companies around," says Kris Sabel, executive director of the Vilar Performing Arts Center. "Every detail in their performance is perfectly constructed and executed flawlessly. This is the perfect family affair and will be an enjoyable evening for audiences of all ages."
The powerful performers exhibit a seamless blend of physical prowess and colorful creativity. The stories in this off-the-wall production are wrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanical wonders and a bit of clowning around.
Tickets for Cirque Mechanics are $45 (child) and $65 (adult), and are available online at vilarpac.org, by phone at 970-845-TIXS or in person at the VPAC Box Office in Beaver Creek.
