Government tracker: Vail Town Council April 2 work session.
Present: Vail Council: Kevin Foley, Susie Tjossem, Ludwig Kurz, Margaret Rogers, Greg Moffet, Kerry Donovan, Mayor Andy Daly.
Issue: Joint discussion with Eagle County commissioners Sara Fisher, Jon Stavney and Jill Ryan, as well as a handful of county staff members.
What they talked about: The hour-plus session included discussion on topics ranging from Interstate 70 on Vail Pass to the Eagle County Regional Airport.
Airport aviation director Greg Phillips gave council members an update on winter flights - which end April 7 - and a new summer flight from Houston, which begins in June. Phillips also told the group that while officials are working to bring more flights in the short term, work continues to try to bring an international commercial terminal to the airport, perhaps by the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships.
On the pass, Vail officials are trying to find a way to help pay for the Vail Fire Department's calls to that stretch of highway. The roadway isn't within the department's district boundaries, so the town essentially provides service there with no reimbursement.
That service, which Vail Fire Chief Mark Miller called "moral responsibility," costs town taxpayers about $180,000 per year.
The situation is about the same on the east side of the pass, where Summit County firefighters respond to highway accidents out of moral duty.
Council members and commissioners eventually agreed that both governments need to seek a solution to the problem through state and federal sources.

Who they talked to: Town planner Tom Kassmel and consultant Rob McConnell.
What they talked about: The town's system for paid parking is between seven and 12 years old. That's old, so town officials are trying to find a new system to replace the old one.
What will probably happen: After some discussion about making the town's parking system more customer-friendly, expect a proposal that will include the option for people to pay for their parking at walk-up kiosks. But it's likely the town will still have people in booths at the parking structure exits to answer questions or handle damaged tickets.
