Devils 'shake' the compeition

GYPSUM - Call it "The Gypsum Shake."

After Saturday's Eagle Valley Invitational track and field meet, the Devils started the "Harlem Shake" in the infield of Hot Stuff Stadium. They displayed lots of good moves, including Eagle Valley athletic director Tamara Payne doing a series of flips to cap it all off.

You can dance all you want when you're on a roll like Eagle Valley track and field is these days. Both the boys and girls won Saturday's meet handily. The boys have yet to lose a meet this season, while the girls won for the second week in a row.

"In all my years of coaching, this is the deepest team I've had," said Eagle Valley coach Jeff Shroll, whose long tenure in Gypsum has included superb athletes and the 2004 3A boys state champions. "Top to bottom, in field events, sprints to distances, they're rock-solid. It's coming from everywhere, jumpers and throwers."

The Devils boys won by 101.5 points over Glenwood Springs, while the Eagle Valley ladies were a healthy 45 points ahead of Battle Mountain.

Speaking of the Huskies, Battle Mountain coach Rob Parish tipped his hat to the Devils, yet is still pleased where his team is at during this point of the season.

"It's taken a little while to figure out how to attack the state-meet qualification system," Parish said. "It's a whole different philosophy than trying to be in top-three (at regionals). What we've been trying to do during the first month is figuring out where our best athletes are, how those pieces fit together. We're going to be on the Front Range the next three weeks at big meets. So I think we have a good idea of where those pieces fit and how to go after the best marks."

Both Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain will have athletes at Coal Ridge Friday. On Saturday, the Devils are at Glenwood, while Huskies are at Mullen.
