Beaver Creek's Vilar season closes out with two STARS programs this week

BEAVER CREEK - The Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek closed its doors on the regular winter season of programming this past weekend, and is excited to open them up to Eagle County's pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students this week with two Supporting the Arts Reaching Students (STARS) Programs. Today, the Mayhem Poets will be performed at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. On Thursday, The Journal of Abby Munson, presented by Imagination Makers Theater Company, will be performed at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The STARS Program is a project of the Vail Valley Foundation, held at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, that offers students in Eagle County artistic, educational and cultural enrichment through in-school workshops and daytime shows.

STARS daytime performances are designed to culturally enhance and support the school curriculum. The 2012-2013 season has featured nine programs and fifteen performances, with Mayhem Poets and the Journal of Abby Munson representing the final two performances of the season. Each production includes a study guide, which is distributed to teachers before the performance, covering writing skills, anti-bullying, diversity and multiculturalism, trust, collaboration, relationships, leadership, self-esteem and values, to name a few. Some of the productions are also performed partially in Spanish.

The 2012-13 STARS season, which is serving more than 6,000 pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students, is made possible by the generosity of the community, including Pat and Peter Frechette, who underwrite the program each year. The Vail Valley Foundation and Vilar Center also reimburse school transportation costs to help keep the entire experience free of cost.

"Watching local students come in and become educated, inspired, mesmerized and entertained by our programming is a true highlight for me and our whole staff," said Kris Sabel, executive director for the Vilar Performing Arts Center. "We look forward to serving more and more students each year with help from our generous community."

The Vilar Performing Arts Center offers limited quantities of tickets to those in the community interested in experiencing the performances alongside the students. For more information, visit www.vilarpac.org or call 970-845-TIXS.
