Vail Valley Academy of Dance jazz dancers take top honors at Denver comp

Vail Valley Academy of Dance has a 10-year history of competing in state dance competitions. Each year the studio has placed in the top 10, but this year three groups not only won their categories, but also won the top highest overall score in their category.

Thirty six Vail Valley Academy dancers, taught by instructors Colin Meiring and Maria Barry, competed in the Kids Artistic Revue competition in Denver on April 6 against more than 500 other dancers from Colorado at the Pinnacle Charter High School.

Serena Kozusko won top highest score with her teen lyrical solo. Kozusko was awarded a $50 cash prize, two trophies, and an offer to participate in the Kids Artistic Revue NYC Convention.

The Teen Jazz Two, a group of six girls, also won its division and won top overall highest score in the teen small group division.

The Teen Jazz One group (12 dancers) also earned top highest overall score in the teen large group category. The Boys' Club, consisting of 12 teen boys, danced extremely well, gaining high scores but did not place in the top 10 of its age group and level.

The competition is a good reflection of how well the students are trained. They were adjudicated by a panel of three judges and were awarded points for technique, showmanship, choreography, costumes and presentation.

Vail Valley Academy of Dance celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The school has almost 300 students taking classes in ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop. It is also the training ground for the exceptional Vail Youth Ballet Company. Anne Powell, the director and owner, is proud of the school's professional, experienced and caring teachers, and its longevity in the community.
